An Ayurvedic Approach to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common female reproductive problem characterized by irregular menstrual flow, irregular menstrual periods, anovulation, obesity, and insulin resistance. PCOS is one of the primary reasons for female infertility, affecting roughly 5-12% of women.

The ovaries, adrenals, pancreas, and pituitary all play a part in PCOS, causing hormonal imbalance. Increased androgen (ovarian hormone) production decreases ovarian follicle maturation. The ovaries grow by two to five times their normal size in most women.

This condition is not classified as a distinct disorder in Ayurveda, although it can be classified as Yoni Vyapat (utero vaginal disorders).

According to Ayurveda, health is primarily determined by the balanced state of dosas, and any deviation from this will result in sickness. This dosha-vaishya is linked to symptoms, and there is a connection between dosas and laksanas.
